The Golden Age of IT Projects?

The Golden Age of IT Projects?

I don’t know about you, but this quarantine business has encouraged me to dip into some of my older computer games in order to escape the boredom. “Sid Meier’s Civilization” is one of my favourite strategy game series. And not only is it fun to pretend to be a world leader for a while, but games can last days at a time. Perfect!

One of the game mechanics that is often seen throughout the series is a “Golden Age”, taking its name from the periods of economic and cultural prosperity enjoyed by the ancient Egyptians.

It got me thinking about our current situation. In life we learn to live with the good and the bad. And I think many of us are using hope to get us through the next weeks or months: “Surely there’s some good on the horizon!”.

Our industry has certainly had a challenging time over the past few weeks. With millions of people working from home IT teams have been “all hands to the pump” sorting out VPN access and firewall changes. But from speaking with my clients this peak of activity has now slowed. And as IT teams are now supporting a cut back version of BAU (with change freezes and projects on hold), could this be IT’s version of a Golden Age?

Slightly less grand of course than Egypt’s fourth dynasty and probably won’t take its place in the history books. But with this additional bandwidth, what an amazing opportunity for IT to finally focus on itself and start those projects that normally take the back seat. Let’s usher in the Golden Age of IT projects (while we can)!
